17 July 2006: Inauguration of the Summer Course given by Universidad Autónoma in Mercamadrid, entitled "The Food Sector in the XXI Century"
The Summer Course given by Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, entitled "The Food Sector in the XXI Century", was inaugurated in the Exhibitions Room of Mercamadrid's Administrative Centre. For two consecutive years, Fundación Mercamadrid and Universidad Autónoma have jointly offered a Summer Course to university members, students and professionals in the sector, who wish to extend their knowledge and receive up-to-date information on the food sector, both from the academic and industrial world. On this occasion, the Course will be fully taught on Mercamadrid's premises. Mr. Guillermo Reglero Rada, Professor in Food Technology of Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, was in charge of presenting the course on the inauguration date, and commented on the general structure of the course: the first day shall be dedicated to a review of the three basic sectors (meat, vegetables and fish); the second day shall examine the general food situation, with its pros and cons; and the third day shall be dedicated to the final conclusions. Next, Ms. P aloma Frial Suárez, Chairman of GRUPO FRIAL, highlighted the significant collaboration between the university, companies and foundations, given that a discussion of the role of food in society and its subsequent broadcasting are essential to provide information to the population on adequate and quality food. Furthermore, she mentioned that a patent had been recently obtained by the R+D+i Department of Grupo Frial, together with Universidad Autónoma, to manufacture functional meat products, given that innovation products are the key to its differentiation and business competitiveness. Next, Mr. L uis Bláquez Torres, Chairman of Mercamadrid and of Fundación Mercamadrid , made the following statement: "Mercamadrid follows an avant-garde policy of transformation for the XXI Century. We wish to incorporate new technologies into traditional food distribution techniques, as this is the only way to adequately develop the food and agricultural sector". He continued by saying: "Mercamadrid is about to celebrate its 25th anniversary and throughout its life has never faced any public health difficulty in Madrid. This achievement is only possible thanks to the professionalism of the people who work in the Industrial Estate, given that the veterinary inspections carried out each day by the City Council of Madrid and Mercamadrid's supervision of activities and application of regulations are insufficient". According to Mr. Angel Gabilondo Pujol, Dean of Universidad Autónoma de Madrid: "The scope of the market also leaves room for communications, technology and opportunities, giving rise to currently available training, health foods and citizen quality of life, thereby overcoming the idea that food is only destined for survival". Furthermore, he announced the creation of a Food Technology Centre on the Universidad Autónoma campus, to be executed together with the Senior Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), in order to become a food research centre of reference in Spain and abroad. Once the summer course was inaugurated, the participants made their speeches, enabling attendants and students to analyse the current situation and future perspectives of the food sector.
